The 250 Best Movies of All Time

The best film of all time

Back in 2019, such a long time ago, they stopped making 'proper' movies, and I made a list of the 250 best movies of all time. As a journalist, I spent a lot of time on this list, hours in fact, and I consider this list to be very accurate in terms of it's scope, it's audacity and it's correctness. Of course, there might be some disagreements on the ORDER of this list, but I don't think that anyone would disagree with it's CONTENT. Now, post 2019, that is to say, 2020 and onwards, I am aware that there have been movies that have been released and that this list might need to be updated, but for the most part, this is as perhaps as definitive a list as you could possibly read, and, a great list for wondering what to watch, if you are ever stuck for a film to watch.

WTW WTF

Also, as always, my blogs are adaptable, and organic, and I probably will, after the debate, add some post 2019 films into this list. In fact, I would like to use the remainder of this blog to discuss a couple of films that I have seen post 2019, and ask for feedback as to where they should appear on this, definitive list, which would also mean, films dropping out of the list, which is quite a serious business. This is serious stuff, so, without further preamble, I present to you, the list, of course, and two films which I have seen that I consider worthy for a place, 'on the list'. Here we go, here we fucking go!

First of all, the list, please, enjoy reading it, it took me hours to compile, back in 2019. IMDB is a great resource for making film lists, look, I made a list of 250 films. If I can do it, so can you. Let's see YOUR top 250 films. Take your time, be considerate and respectful but most of all, enjoy making your list. It doesn't have to be 250 of course, but maybe it would be nice to do a top ten. I really enjoyed making my list, as I recall, was such fun! Anyway, the list, the list!

My top 250 movies innit - IMDb

Now, let's talk about Dune, which is, IMHO, a very very good film and I watched it recently and I think it probably should be on this list, this definitive list. First of all, it's a very very pretty film, with echoes of 2001, but unfortunately not with some of those lingering shots. I mean, there are lingering shots, but I wish they could have been more lingering, if you know what I mean? Few films, if any, have the pure confidence to linger on a shot, which is what film is all about IMHO. A lingering shot? Yes please, makes you really stop and think about what's gone before and where the film is going. There are some shots in Dune that linger a little, but not enough for my liking. It takes supreme confidence to have a lingering shot in your film, with some haunting music, that takes confidence, and cinema is more empty for the lack of lingering shots. I am not saying that there are no lingering shots in movies these days, but if you want to make your film great, just linger, just pan, just stay there a while, please. Everything is so fast paced these days, with an excess of editing. Sometimes, I just want a shot to linger, to stay, to pause and reflect, the beauty of it all, this is cinema we are talking about here, this isn't a commercial for Gatorade. Also Dune, if I am being hypercritical, sticks to the plot too fast, too hard, and of course that's lovely to see, but I would have liked to have seen some more radical departures from the source material. However, this is only part one, and I can't wait for the second part. IMHO there should be a third part too. This film is excellent, lovely acting, it looks amazing and the story is, like some people have said, like a Game of Thrones in space kinda deal, but that does an injustice to both GoT and Dune. This is a 9/10 film, missing out on 10/10 due to not going in enough new directions, and the aforementioned lingering shots thing, that I mentioned a lot, looking back, but I think it's important. But where shall it go on the list? Also, please see the film, because if you don't they won't make the second one.

250 worthy

Now, I would like to talk about Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn. This is a film that I probably would not normally watch, but I am very glad I did. It's really a different type of film, and simply for that alone, it needs to be on the official best movie list of all time. I haven't put a YouTube video up, because I watched it without knowing that much about it, in fact, nothing at all, and benefitted from that a lot. I don't recommend you watch a trailer, and honestly, I'm not even sure I would recommend the film because it's not your traditional film at all. It's split into three distinct acts, and I will say, that the first act will really test your patience. And it has many, many lingering shots, not long enough for my liking, because as you know I like a lingering shot, but enough 'to make you think'. Even so, that first act tested even my patience, but it definitely picks up in the second and third acts. Also, this film has, I really should mention, hardcore sex scenes in it. It's a brave and bold move, and important to the overall impact of the film, especially in the third act. The second act, also, I will say, is actually very factually interesting. This film will make you think, and it will learn you good as well. It's an excellent film and deserves it's place on the official top 250 films of all time list. But where? That is the question, the question indeed. This is very difficult. I will just say further than it really felt like a look at the past through a present day lens. I really really found this film interesting, very very much so!

Lists

Look, of course I realise this is just my list, my own personal list and it's only valid for me. Which is why we all love and hate lists when someone comes out and says, look at this lists. I believe there are studies on humans about why we love order and lists, a ranking, the debate about it, and for me, I do rage when I see lists lists like this one that have an air of authenticity about them. They are as much correct as my list, in fact, IMHO, less so, because my list is my list, and by that definition, entirely correct. Like a best whisky list, a best food list, a best anything list. I believe the word is 'subjective'. I shall leave this here, and linger myself on the thought of lists. lingering shots, and perhaps go watch 2001 at some point, purely for those lingering shots.
